“The right gifted education is your right!”

Home

Parents of a gifted child usually know their child the best and therefore, they should be an integral part of the team that is responsible for writing the right educational plan for their child and for implementing this plan. Through collaboration with their child’s teachers and school administrators, parents can relate their child’s learning strengths and interests enabling school personnel to apply appropriate instructional strategies that will help their gifted child achieve at maximum levels.

School

It is the school’s obligation to make sure all students within that school receive an appropriate education based on the needs of each student. This includes gifted students whose needs may require modifications made to the curriculum and methods of instruction through acceleration, enrichment or a combination of both. These modifications or differentiated instruction may include changes to the content of the curriculum itself, changes in the ways teachers work with their gifted learners and changes in the products, performances and expectations of their gifted learners. Proper differentiation that is individualized to meet the unique needs of each gifted student requires collaboration between teachers, parents, students and administrators so that everyone takes on the responsibility of providing appropriate gifted education for the school’s gifted students.

Community

Sometimes the resources within the school are not enough to meet all the needs of each gifted student. Some gifted students have needs that exceed the capacity of the school’s curriculum and the school must reach out to the community for alternative instructional opportunities such as mentorship programs with experts in various fields of study, dual enrollment with students taking college courses while still in high school, competitions that address student strengths, partnerships with museums in areas of interests and many more. By connecting to the community and its valuable resources, schools can broaden the educational experiences of their gifted learners so that their education becomes more challenging and relevant to their unique needs.

My Philosophy

Dr. Judith Mosse - Gifted Education Consultant and SpeakerGifted children have the right to an education that is challenging and meets their needs. They need opportunities to learn information at a faster speed than what is expected of their same-age peers, to opt out of work that they have already mastered, to pursue interest areas, to go beyond the basics and work with abstract concepts, to apply their learning to real life situations and to have opportunities to interact regularly with their intellectual peers. The “right gifted education” should be individualized to meet the unique needs of each gifted student which requires a collaborative effort among parents, all educators in the school and available community resources. Lack of time, lack of teacher training and the dynamics of the school culture often prevent the implementation of an appropriate gifted education for gifted students. I am committed to helping parents and educators overcome these barriers so that gifted students receive the education they deserve. Please feel free to contact me if you think I can help parents advocate for their gifted children, train pre-service and/or in-service educators in the field of gifted education and/or help facilitate the school culture so gifted students have their educational needs met.
